Padel grades

Padel players at Esher are grouped by our coaches into the following categories. These six categories align to the criteria used by the LTA and at many other clubs but have been streamlined for the purposes of clarity and simplicity.

This information should be used by members to understand which coaching clinics and mix-in sessions to book onto. This ensures the sessions we run are enjoyable and competitive, and offer members the chance to meet new players of comparable ability. If players persistently book onto sessions which are above their level, we reserve the right to cancel those bookings.

Ultimately we want all members to have enjoyable matches. So if you’re a High Advanced player who enjoys playing with friends at the Intermediate level, you should continue to do so. But we hope this grading system will help those seeking to play with others of similar ability.

  • Improver

Completely new to padel and racket sports in general, or not yet able to get the ball in play reliably. Can only play short length, slow-paced rallies.

  • High improver

Most likely has some basic experience of padel or other racket sports but is still working at playing shots with accuracy and control. Playing with single glass is a challenge.

  • Intermediate

Has some experience of padel match play and/or is a good player in another racket sport. Is reasonably consistent with accuracy and control, and is able to use the glass when the ball travels at an average pace.

  • High intermediate

Has good experience of padel match play and can execute a variety of shots. Has a solid understanding of padel tactics and can cover the court well. May struggle with the technical execution of more challenging shots.

  • Advanced

Has extensive padel experience. Can attack and defend comfortably in most situations. Is starting to compete in leagues and tournaments.

  • High advanced

Has experience of competing at a high tournament level. Can easily sustain high intensity matches with expert control. Has few weaknesses.

“Esher is a great place to play padel. I play regularly with dozens of people I’d never met before I joined and never struggle to get a good game.”
